There was a time when the only things that "twittered" were birds and flocks of small girls on their way to school and a "twit" was that fabulous English way of calling someone an idiot.
Since the launch of the social network service Twitter, the word has taken on a new meaning.
Twitter describes itself as "a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?" Twitterers (people who twitter) use their mobile phones or computers to send short messages (less than 140 characters) to other people to let them know what they are currently doing. This might include such fascinating news as "I just got out of bed" or "I just removed the tumour from the patient's kidney" (that's no joke, a surgeon in Detroit actually twittered from the operating room on his laptop).
Diverse people have begun to twitter, from the veteran British politician Tony Benn to the Archbishop of Canterbury, and even the royal family is twittering. The Telegraph reported "Her Majesty the Queen has taken a bold technological step by becoming the first member of the royal family to twitter."
