WORD ORIGIN

Zealot comes from the Greek "zelotes," a zealous admirer or follower. The term Zealot, in Hebrew kanai, means one who is zealous on behalf of God.

The Zealots were a 1st century Jewish political movement that formed under the rule of Herod the Great, a Judaic king. The Zealots were famous for their strong convictions and their resistance to Roman rule, which they sought to eliminate. They opposed the Romans due to Rome's intolerance of their culture and on the grounds that Israel belonged only to a Jewish king descended from King David.

In A.D. 6, when Jerusalem was completely under Roman rule, authorities dictated that a census be taken to calculate how much to tax Jewish people. As a result, the Zealots called for a rebellion. One extremist group of Zealots called Sicarri (dagger men) used terrorist tactics to kill and assassinate Romans and Jews who favoured Roman authority.

In the Talmud, a central text of Judaism, the Zealots are also called the Biryonim, meaning "boorish" or "wild." They are criticised for their aggression, their unwillingness to compromise to save the survivors of besieged Jerusalem, and their blind militarism. They are further blamed for having contributed to the demise of Jerusalem and the second Jewish Temple.
