A study to determine Cape Town's most suitable VENUE for 2010 FIFA World Cup matches has identified Green Point Stadium as the favourite.
(Embassy of the Republic of South Africa web site)
--- The next time the NBWA (National Beer Wholesalers Association) meets in Las Vegas, chances are good that the city's new Hofbrauhaus will be a VENUE of choice. The restaurant, located across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, is described as a bona fide replica of the Munich Hofbrauhaus that was originally commissioned in 1589 by *King William V*.
(adapted from Modern Brewery Age Magazine)
* We were a bit suspicious when we read this. As the Hofbrauhaus web site points out, it was Wilhelm V, Herzog von Bayern, who commissioned the construction of this Munich landmark. In addition to Las Vegas, the Hofbrauhaus also has a location near Cincinnati Ohio and plans to open a third U.S. restaurant in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 2007.
Both cities attracted scores of German immigrants in the late 19th century and were once the home of many breweries, many of which went out of business because they were unable to compete with mega-producers like Budweiser.
Did you know?
venue
- a place where a public event or meeting happens
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- WORD ORIGIN Circa 1300. According to the Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology, venue stems from the Old French venue, which meant coming, as in a pending attack (further derived from the Latin venire, “to come”).
The sense of a place where a case in law is tried was first recorded in 1531. The word eventually came to mean a locality in general, particularly a site for a sporting event or concert.
Speaking of which, you probably know by now that the world's most famous (and meanwhile not the best) footballer David Beckham and his wife, ex Spice Girl Victoria (Adams) Beckham, have selected a new venue to further their global lifestyle. And what better venue than Los Angeles, the celebrity capital of the world?
Mr. Beckham signed probably the world's largest sports contract ever to join the Los Angeles Galaxy football (US soccer) team. Given that the United States is not necessarily a football Mecca, many people speculate that the Beckham's interest in Los Angeles is simply “venue-oriented”.
In other words, merely a strategy calculated to take advantage of the couple's celebrity status. On the other hand, who wouldn't seriously consider changing venues for $250 million?
