The term necking simply stems from the idea of kissing and caressing the neck when couples "make out" or "snog". We are talking about human couples of course. Giraffes neck as well, but this involves two males in combat to see who gets the girl for "real" necking.

Like most things these days, there is "extreme" necking. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Nikola Matovic and Kristina Reinhart (both of Germany) currently hold the world record for non-stop necking. On February 13 and 14, 2009 in Hamburg, the two love birds snogged without a break for 32 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds.

Etymology: In Old English, the neck was usually referred to as the "hals", the general Germanic term for throat, which can also mean neck. At some point the Old English "hnecca" developed to mean neck or the back of the neck, which is also related to the German "Nacken". "Hnecca" then evolved over time to "neck".
