Looking for ways to deal with the boredom of idly standing around with a cigarette in the hand, many smokers who are forced outside because of smoking bans are turning to their mobile phones and SMS messaging.
Called smexting, the term was created by combining the words SMoking and TEXTING, as in SMS messages. Mobile phone operators in countries like Great Britain are celebrating an unexpected side effect. In the two weeks following the smoking ban in Britain for instance, the number of SMS messages sent over the Orange mobile phone network skyrocketed by 7.5 million.
This practice yields an additional benefit by allowing self-conscious smokers to concentrate on the mobile phone display, meaning they're not required to endure the disapproving stares of choleric non-smoking colleagues. Office and pub smokers without mobile phones must resort to SMIRTING (smoking and flirting), SMINKING (smoking and drinking), SMABBERING (smoking and blabbering), SMALKING (smoking and talking), SMOSSIPING (smoking and gossiping), or SMACING (smoking and staring into space).
