Reimburse is a nice word, provided that one is at the receiving end of the "reimbursement." If your company sends you on a business trip and you pay for the travel expenses out of your own pocket, your company "reimburses" you for those expenses. If you lend someone money, they reimburse you when they pay you back.

People also get reimbursed when they incur a monetary loss. Let's say someone in the neighbourhood accidentally kicks a football through one of your windows. You can expect to be reimbursed for the cost of replacing the window - or you keep the ball as compensation if it has an autograph of Ronaldo.

Defective products or less-than-expected service can also lead to a reimbursement. Let's say you purchase a mobile phone and you discover it doesn't work. You can't even call the retailer or the manufacturer to explain that it doesn't work. You want to be reimbursed, either with a replacement phone or cash money.

The word reimburse is formed from re (back) + imburse (to pay, enrich). Imburse in turn stems from the Middle French embourser (en = in + borser = purse) and eventually from the Latin "bursa" or purse.
