WORD ORIGIN
Our etymology sources tell us that the word ramp derives from the French rampe, meaning slope or incline. As the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary says, the verb ramp means: to speed up, expand, or increase especially quickly or at a constant rate (can be used with up, such as ramping up to full speed).

Just about anything can be ramped up; manufacturing production, security measures, financial investments, marketing activities, network capacity and of course birth rates. That's right, birth rates. If you believe the experts and politicians, if Germany does not begin to "ramp up” its birth rate soon, the social security system will be in trouble, meaning pension payments will need to be "ramped down”. For the answer to this dilemma though, look no further than England.

According to the British baby products company Mamas and Papas, England will soon experience a baby boom because of couples who celebrated England's World Cup wins in June 2006. The company estimates the three wins that England managed before being eliminated will lead to around 10,000 babies being conceived. The prediction is based on research that suggests the number of conceptions rises when England has been victorious.

So what does that mean for Germany's birth rate since the national team managed six victories including the consolation game against Portugal? If we use England's victory-to-conception ratio of 3,333 (10,000 new babies / 3 wins) and multiply by 1.6 to account for the population difference (82.5 million in Germany versus 50 million in England), we can expect nearly 32,000 German World Cup babies in March and April of this year.

Who would have thought football could increase Germany's birth rate? How about Mr. Beckenbauer as Family Minister?
