1. lacking adornments or special features 2. basic or ordinary
(The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.)
--- WORD ORIGIN The bean from the vanilla plant is used as a natural flavouring agent in many foods. One of the major uses is in ice cream. Vanilla was the most commonly available ice cream flavour for many years until other varieties such as chocolate and strawberry were introduced. Thus vanilla, or plain vanilla, is used to describe anything that is ordinary or lacks special features.
Meanwhile there is no limit to the imagination when it comes to ice cream flavours. The Baskins-Robbins ice cream chain claims to have developed more than 1,000 flavours including Pink Bubblegum and New York Cheesecake.
