WORD ORIGIN
The word luke, which is obsolete except for its use in lukewarm, likely derives from the Middle English and Middle Dutch leuk, which means to lack emotional enthusiasm. In turn, leuk probably originated from the Old English hleowe, meaning warm.

Luke is also a first name that derives from the Greek name Loukas, which was a reference to Lucania, an ancient region in Italy. Some of the better-known “Lukes” are:

Lucky Luke - the comic book cowboy who can shoot faster than his shadow.
The Apostle Luke - along with Matthew, Mark and John, author of one of the New Testament's four gospels (Evangelium).
Luke Skywalker - the Star Wars hero.
Cool Hand Luke - a character played by Paul Newman in the same-named movie, which produced the famous line: “What we've got here is failure to communicate.”
