lifting the silverware idiom
- to win a football championship, such as a league title or a tournament
--- Apart from scoring the winning goal in a shoot-out, every child who has played football dreams of winning a championship and holding the winner's cup high in the air in celebration. Because many of these cups are made of silver, "lifting the silverware" means to win a championship.
The original FIFA World Cup trophy was made of gold-plated sterling silver and depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. This trophy was given permanently to Brazil after it won its third World Cup in 1970. It was then replaced in 1974 with one made of 18-carat gold. It shows two human figures holding up the Earth.
The current FIFA World Cup Trophy is not kept permanently by the winner, as the regulations state that it is the property of FIFA. The winners retain it for four years (until the next tournament), after which they are given a gold-plated replica. The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite while the bottom side of the trophy bears the engraved year and name of each FIFA World Cup winner since 1974.
Brazil has won more World Cup titles (five) than any country so far. In second place is Italy with four and Germany follows with three. Germany also holds the record for most runners-up (second place) with four. At the European level Germany has lifted the silverware three times at the European Championships. Spain and France have won the title twice.
