Baseball, the great American pastime as they call it, is responsible for more idioms and expressions than probably any other sport. For non-Americans, baseball can seem confusing and hard to understand.

Like cricket, a popular sport in Britain and other Commonwealth countries, one player (the bowler in cricket and the pitcher in baseball) throws a ball at another player (batsman in cricket and batter in baseball) who tries to hit the ball with a bat.

The batter has three attempts to swing at and hit the ball. If he fails in all three attempts, he "strikes out" and loses the opportunity score a run (a point) for his team. Thus figuratively speaking someone is said to strike out when they are unsuccessful at something.

Other baseball idioms include:

- in the ballpark = within a broad range or approximation of something (The cost estimate was in the ball park)

- cover one's bases = to be prepared for any contingency (Let's cover our bases before we meet with the lawyers)

- throw someone a curve = to do something unexpected (She threw me a curve when she agreed to go out with me)

- play hardball = to be tough, especially as a negotiator (She got them to low their price because she knows how to play hardball)

- hit or miss = to succeed or fail completely (This strategy could be hit or miss)
