A hat trick in sport is the achievement of a positive feat three times or more during a game. The term was first used in 1858 in cricket after the famous English bowler HH Stephenson took three wickets (dismissed three batsmen) with three consecutive balls. As the story is told, the fans collected money for Stephenson and used the proceeds to buy him a hat, thus leading to the expression hat trick.

Hat trick was used in print for the first time in 1878 and eventually adopted by other sports including football, water polo and handball to describe when a player scores three goals in one game. The expression first became popular in North America during the mid-1940s in the National Hockey League.

One exception is bowling, where three consecutive strikes is referred to as a "turkey." This originated from the early days of the sport when strikes were not as common. To promote their bowling centres, operators awarded bowlers who got 3 consecutive strikes a turkey during the Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday seasons.

Hat trick can also be applied to situations outside of sports, such as someone who wins three awards within a short period of time or at a single ceremony like the Oscars (film) or the Grammy awards (music).
