ETA
abbreviation

- abbreviation for estimated time of arrival: the time you expect to arrive

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
A pilot and his small son are in a small single engine airplane circling an airport waiting for landing instructions:

Pilot to control tower: Do you have an ETA for me?
Control tower: Do you have a priority situation?
Pilot: Does "Daddy, I have to go to the toilet" qualify as a priority?
Tower: Roger, you are cleared for landing.

The estimated time of arrival, or ETA for short, is a measure of when a ship, vehicle, aircraft, cargo, emergency service or computer file is expected to arrive at a certain place. One of the more common uses is in public transportation where the movements of trains, buses and airplanes can be used to generate estimated times of arrival depending on a static timetable or based on traffic flow measurements.

ETA is often paired with its opposite, "estimated time of departure" or "ETD", to indicate the expected start time of a particular journey. ETA is also used metaphorically when there is no physical movement, such as in describing the time estimated to complete a task.

Because Internet users love abbreviations and acronyms, ETA is often found in Internet forums to describe things like when a software release is expected.
