noun phrase

- a first-class honours degree in two subjects

(Collins English Dictionary)

---
The British undergraduate degree system is classified into categories based on how well students perform on their exams. The basic categories are:

- First-class honours = Typically indicates the highest level of academic achievement. Some universities award first-class honours with distinction such as the Cambridge "Starred First" or the Oxford "Congratulatory First."

- Upper and lower second class honours = Also referred to as a 2:1 and 2:2 respectively, a second-class degree is usually the minimum required to pursue a postgraduate degree such as a masters or doctorate.

- Third-class honours = The lowest of the "honours" classification.

- Ordinary degree = A degree without honours.

The system also developed a form of rhyming slang to describe the different classifications. It uses the names of famous people, but only the first name. For instance:

- A First is called either a Geoff or a Damien (refers to footballer Geoff Hurst and artist Damien Hirst)

- A 2:2 is called a Desmond, after Archbishop Desmond Tutu

- A Fail is referred to as a Dan, after former U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle
