When fire-fighter Brian Patrick arrived at a Newmarket fire late Thursday, he found a tiny victim barely alive.
The Central York Fire Services platoon chief was handed a 5-year-old Shih Tzu dog by a security guard at the community housing building. The guard had rescued the dog, named Tiny, from the smouldering home at about 11:15 p.m.
Patrick could feel that the dog had an erratic heartbeat. As he held it, the animal’s heart stopped beating altogether.
"The dog was close to going," said Patrick, who gave the dog CPR a minute and a half. Then he stabilized Tiny by using a canine oxygen mask, donated to Central York Fire Services a few years ago, for about 20 minutes.
Patrick had never before revived a dog in his 33 years with the fire department, he said, and he hopes he won’t need to again.
"I would prefer for them to just come up and lick me," he said.
