WORD ORIGIN
Circa pre-1300. Derived from the Latin brevis, meaning short and from the Late Latin breve, a letter or summary. Originally used in the phrase breve scriptum, a short written note, specifically from the Pope.

The use of the word briefing is first attested in 1910, but came into popular use during World War II when fighter pilots held pre-flight meetings before going into combat. Briefings are an essential tool for military and law enforcement personnel when preparing for missions.

Thousands of press briefings are held around the world each day by businesses and government agencies. This is a common method to disseminate information in a controlled environment. In the United States, the daily White House briefings have a long tradition. In the UK, Number 10 Downing Street maintains an online media centre with press briefings from the Prime Minister's official spokesperson.
