--- Athlete's foot is a contagious fungal skin infection (tinea pedis) caused by a species of Trichophyton or Epidermophyton that usually affects the feet, especially the skin between the toes. It is characterised by itching, blisters, cracking, and scaling. It is so-called because it is a common ailment among athletes often picked up in gymnasium showers, but also in swimming pools.
Apart from athlete's foot, other body parts have the honour of being included in ailment descriptions such as:
- tennis elbow = swelling of the elbow joints and ligaments caused by physical stress to the elbow area
- cell phone elbow = symptoms similar to tennis elbow, but caused by holding the elbow for too long at an angle while talking
