Athlete's foot is a contagious fungal skin infection (tinea pedis) caused by a species of Trichophyton or Epidermophyton that usually affects the feet, especially the skin between the toes. It is characterised by itching, blisters, cracking, and scaling. It is so-called because it is a common ailment among athletes often picked up in gymnasium showers, but also in swimming pools.
