vivify
verb

- To endow with life or renewed life; animate

- To enliven; brighten; sharpen

- To make (someone or something) more lively or vivid

Merriam-Webster, Dictionary Com, Britannica

WORD ORIGIN

“Vivify” derives from 14th century French vivifier, which came from Late Latin vivificare, the Latin roots being: vivus = alive, living, and facere = to make, to do (literal meaning: "to make alive”).

15th century Middle English vivifien, developed into vivify from the 16th century onward.

Related words from the same Latin root vivus are: vivid (full of life, bright), vivacious (lively, spirited), revive (to bring back to life), survive (to continue living), convivial (relating to feasting and living together), viviparous (giving birth to live young).

The modern meaning: “to give life to, animate, enliven, or make more lively and striking” has remained relatively stable in meaning over centuries - it has always carried the sense of bringing something to life or making it more alive.

VIVIFY OR VANISH

According to Noble Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton, there’s a high chance that Super-AI’s will eventually develop the intelligence and power to destroy humanity.... his solution may be our only chance! Here's what he said in a recent podcast:

"If we can't figure out a solution as to how we can still be around when they're much smarter than us and much more powerful than us, we'll be toast. So we need to figure that out. And the best solution he can think of so far is give them a strong maternal instinct towards people."

"Most of the AI experts believe that sometime in the next five to 20 years, we'll make AIs that are smarter than people. And there's very few examples we know of smarter things being controlled by less smart things. In fact, pretty much the only example we know is a mother being controlled by her baby. To make that happen, evolution built maternal instincts into the mother. And if we don't do something like that with these alien beings that we're creating, we're going to be history."

"The problem is that governments, large corporations, IT companies and start-ups haven't been focusing on developing empathy in AI systems. They've been focusing on making these things more intelligent. But intelligence is just one part of a being. We need to make them have empathy towards us. We don't know how to do that yet. But if evolution managed it, we should be able to do it too."
