know?
layover (US English for stopover)
noun and verb
- a short stay in a place that you make while you are on a longer journey to somewhere else
(Cambridge Dictionary)
---
For the frequent traveller, layovers (compound word comprised of lay = stop + over = a period of time) can be a literal pain in the neck, especially if you try to sleep in an uncomfortable plastic chair without a headrest in a noisy waiting area.
Some airports offer relief from the chaos and boredom however. Below are a few examples for those fortunate enough to layover at one of these facilities:
- Munich International Airport – The airport’s hubs include secluded individual sleeping pods with USB and iPhone ports for $20 an hour.
- Hong Kong International Airport – Outside the terminal and away from the runways is a nine-hole golf course.
- Seoul’s Incheon International Airport – An ice skating rink and a miniature golf course are in the terminal. There are also seven walk-through gardens.
San Francisco International Airport - A branch of the city’s Steinhart Aquarium is located on the restricted side of the security line.
