WORD ORIGIN

Hiraeth is built from hir, the Welsh word for "long," plus -aeth, a suffix that turns an adjective into an abstract noun — though one proposed etymology reads the second element as aeth, meaning "pain, grief, or sorrow". Either way, the bones of the word say: a longness of feeling, a grief stretched over distance and time.

The word carries real historical weight. After 1847, when English was pushed into Welsh schools at the expense of the Welsh language, hiraeth is said to have intensified — a people beginning to long for their own culture while still standing inside it.

HOME INSIDE US

There are places we remember that no longer exist.

The house may still be there. The road has the same name. We can drive back, park outside and look through the gate.

But it isn't the place we remember. The kitchen seems smaller. The tree has gone. Someone else's curtains are at the window. And the people who made it home may have died, grown old or simply moved away.

Nostalgia doesn't quite cover this. It sounds too pleasant. Old photographs. Favourite songs. Fond memories. Hiraeth is a little more painful.

We can feel it for times in our lives too. A team that worked well together. Our children when they were small. A group of friends who somehow lost touch. A city before it changed. Even the person we used to be.

What is strange is that we rarely knew, at the time, how much we would miss these things. Nobody says at breakfast on an ordinary Tuesday: Remember this. One day you'll wish you could come back. Perhaps we should.

Not in a gloomy way. Just by paying a little more attention. The sound of someone laughing in the next room. A familiar coat hanging by the door. The dog asleep in its usual place. The view from a window we have looked through a thousand times.

Small things. Ordinary things. The sort of things we hardly notice now, but may one day give anything to remember clearly. Hiraeth is about what we can no longer return to.

Perhaps it can also remind us to notice where we are now.
