'Giggle' dates from 1509 and is one of the very few synonyms we have for the common word laugh.
Here's what Merriam-Webster says:
intransitive senses : to laugh with repeated short catches of the breath
transitive senses : to utter with a giggle
Note that a giggle is a special kind of laugh though, usually associated with children, or childish behaviour.
