(Oxford Dictionary)

---
The similarity between guise and disguise is no accident as both stem from the Old French guise (manner, fashion, way) and eventually from the Frankish "wisa" or some similar Germanic source (related to the Old High German wisa meaning manner, wise).

How the original sense of wise evolved to refer to concealing something is not clear, but this latter sense first appeared in the late 17th century.

Although they have the same root, guise refers to a way of acting or a mannerism (in the guise of or under the guise of), while disguise means to hide one's real identity. Following are a couple of examples that illustrate this slight difference:

- Under the guise of a free service, the application eventually requires users to pay for so-called premium services that really should be included at no cost.

- The hotspot was disguised as a free WiFi network to trap users into revealing their passwords.
