WORD ORIGIN
Shindig is thought to be a variation of the older word "shindy", which in turn is believed to be a derivative of "shinny", a simple version of hockey played by schoolchildren that likely has its origins in "shinty" or "shinny", a Scottish game similar to hockey that is played with a bent stick.
Shindig, like it's older predecessor shindy, has two different meanings. It can describe a party, especially a really lively one that includes music and dancing, or it can mean a riotous fight or brawl.
Some sources believe that before the U.S. Civil War, shindig literally meant "a kick to the shins." Others suggest that in the years around World War I, a shindig was a type of hopping and skipping dance that often resulted in bruised shins.
