Second Lifer (also 2nd Lifer)

noun, slang

- a person who spends a lot time in online virtual reality experiences

WORD ORIGIN

The expression Second Lifer or 2nd Lifer comes from Second Life, a virtual reality world accessible via the Internet. California-based Linden Lab developed and launched Second Life in 2003. A free client program called the Second Life Viewer enables users, called Residents, to interact with each other through avatars.

Residents can explore, meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade virtual property and services with one another and travel throughout the world, which residents call the grid.

Second Lifers are sometimes depicted in the media as obsessed computer freaks who never step away from their computers except to occasionally get something to eat. While certainly not true of all Second Lifers, the actions of some do little to help combat this stereotype.

A woman in Delaware in the United States was charged in 2008 with plotting the real-life abduction of a boyfriend she met through Second Life. Court records indicate the woman drove to the 52-year-old man's apartment with a stun gun, handcuffs and duct tape. She fled when he came home, discovered her and called police. Police said the man broke off the relationship after they met in person. Instead of a virtual reality experience, the woman is now facing the "harsh reality" of jail time.

"The problem with Second Lifers is the effect that computers have on their first life."
