Means the study of the cultural, behavioral, and sociological aspects of spatial distances between individuals.
From the Latin proximitas, and from which comes the common word "proximity" meaning quality or state of being next in time, place, causation, influence,
Proxemics is said by anthropologist Edward Hall to be "the study of how man unconsciously structures microspace." That quote comes from 1963 and is the first recorded instance of the word.
A synonym would be the more difficult to pronounce "territoriality".
