WORD ORIGIN

"Lentiginous" comes from the Latin lentīginōsus meaning "freckled”, in turn derived from lentīgo meaning "freckle" or "lentil-shaped spot”, from lēns, lentis meaning "lentil" + the suffix "-īgō.

The word entered Late Middle English around 1400 as a borrowing from Latin.

FRECKLE FEVER

Freckles, those charming lentiginous spots that sprinkle across the skin like a playful kiss from the sun, have fascinated and inspired people for generations. Remi Brixton, founder of Freck Beauty, recalls her childhood obsession with freckles, a passion that led her to create a brand celebrating these natural marks. In a time when freckles were considered flaws, Brixton saw them as unique, beautiful features that deserved admiration, not disdain.

Historically, the perception of freckles has fluctuated. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they were often viewed as unsightly, with beauty advertisements promoting creams to erase these "homely spots." But by the 1950s, as a life of leisure in the sun became desirable, freckles began to be seen as charming and even fashionable. Icons like Twiggy and Jane Birkin in the '60s proudly displayed their freckled faces, paving the way for broader acceptance.

Fast forward to the mid-2000s, and freckles were not only embraced but also actively sought after. Makeup artists added faux freckles to models' faces to convey everything from sportiness to a retro vibe.

Freckles have become so celebrated that some people now opt for freckle tattoos, a trend that surged after Meghan Markle proudly displayed hers on her wedding day. Tattoo artist Shaughnessy Otsuji, who used to draw freckles on herself, now tattoos them on clients, ensuring they look as natural as possible with varying shapes, sizes, and levels of opacity.

Today, freckles are not just a trend; they’re a nostalgic link to carefree days and sunny memories. It’s clear that these tiny dots are here to stay, reminding us that sometimes, what was once seen as a flaw can become a symbol of individuality and charm.
