(Cambridge Dictionary)
--- Etymologists have been searching for the origin of the word jazz (the origin of jazz music is not in question) for decades. So far they have only turned up unproven theories, although the most logical is the meanwhile obsolete late 19th century American slang "jasm," meaning spirit, energy, vigour.
Several late 19th century/early 20th century American musicians with names like Jasper (nicknamed Jazz), Chas and Jasbo, as well as a New Orleans band called Razz, have all been cited as possible origins.
And then there are French terms like "chassé" (a dance step) and jaser (useless talk) and the Arabic "jazib" (an alluring person) which have also been named as candidates. There are also references to jasmine oil that was used in the sense of "jassing up" perfumes.
Finally, much has been written about a possible connection to professional baseball in America. The word did start to appear in a San Francisco newspaper in 1913 in a baseball context and was used by several sportswriters, one of who claims to have heard the expression in a dice game.
At this point, it would appear that jazz is a lot easier to listen to than trying to figure out where the word came from.
