--- The Last Dress Rehearsal
The great tenor Luciano Pavarotti had organised a highly-anticipated formal retirement from operatic performance by taking on another dramatic tenor role —Puccini's Tosca — at the New York Met in 2002. Pavarotti sang the dress rehearsal but cancelled the performance just a few hours before he was to go on.
His manager begged him to go through with it or at least show up to take a bow for those who had paid as much as $1,800 a seat to hear his final performance. Pavarotti refused, saying he had the flu.
Pavarotti still performed a total of 379 times at the Met. 357 of them were in fully staged opera productions.
