In the 1950s, Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis and the owners of several other Monte Carlo casinos encouraged Prince Rainier of Monaco to marry a movie star to raise the area's profile and boost their businesses. (They were also concerned by a clause in the treaty binding France and Monaco which stipulated that the principality would revert to France - and lose its tax haven status - if the ruler failed to produce a male heir.)

Rainier agreed to marry Grace Kelly, but demanded a $2,000,000 DOWRY from her wealthy family.

Kelly, Grace Patricia (1929-1982) American actress, wife of Prince Ranier III of Monaco - noted for her roles in such films as High Noon (1952), Rear Window (1954), The Country Girl (1954, Oscar), To Catch a Thief (1955), and High Society (1956)
