It is most often used when referring to someone who belongs to a particular religion. (Maria will not join us for our outing on Sunday morning. She's a devout Baptist and will be in church)
Someone who is earnest and sincere in any belief, and who is totally committed to a cause, can also be called devout. Believers may be members of political, social, or environmental organizations. Supporters of football clubs can be devout fans, and find purpose in their lives through their favourite team.
In recent decades, companies such as Apple have built up a base of loyal followers who become devout users of their products. These fans believe that Apple products are nearly perfect, and certainly better than those of the competitors. Users may even try to convert others to their way of thinking, and to try to persuade them join their chosen community.
