WORD ORIGIN
Initially in the 1630s, "cachet" was borrowed into English from French Canadian trappers' slang, referring to a "hiding place for stores and provisions". This was likely a back-formation from the French phrase lettre de cachet, meaning "letter under seal of the king".
The meaning then evolved in the 18th century through the French phrase lettre de cachet to signify a "personal stamp (of the king)". From this, the figurative meaning "symbol of prestige" emerged around 1840.
