WORD ORIGIN

Xenophobia combines the Greek words xenos (stranger) and phobos (fear) and first entered the language around 1919. It's often thought to be synonymous with racism, but some linguists and psychologists view it in the literal sense of being afraid of something foreign or strange. This is opposed to racism, which is characterised by a discriminatory or prejudiced attitude towards people of a different race.

Phobia is used as a suffix to describe numerous fears and aversions. Nearly any kind of phobia can be created by simply adding this suffix to make a new word.

We don't have the space to list every known phobia, but we have outlined a few, some of which might be considered absurd by the general population. But for those affected by this particular fear, it's no laughing matter.

acrophobia = fear of heights
dromophobia = fear of crossing streets
ephebiphobia = fear of teenagers
ochlophobia = fear of crowds or mobs
technophobia = fear of technology
xenoglossophobia = fear of foreign languages

and finally,...

anglophobia = fear of England or English culture (we couldn't resist this one…)

teutophobia = fear of Germans or German things (we couldn't resist this one either)
