WORD ORIGIN

In 1982, British author Peter York published a book titled "The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook." York was then the style editor of Harpers & Queen, a British society magazine that was responsible for identifying the "Sloane" phenomena.

The term Sloane Ranger originally referred to the young upper- and upper-middle-class men and women living in London's expensive and trendy West End where Sloane Square is located. The term is a word play on Sloane Square and the television character The Lone Ranger (a western super hero vigilante who rode around dispensing justice).

The stereotypical Sloane is between 20 and 30 years of age, comes from a high-income family, either doesn't work or has an easy job in the family business, wears expensive, traditional brand clothing and hangs out in trendy bars and restaurants.

Changing demographics in London has altered the definition of a Sloane. Places like Notting Hill, once a low-income immigrant community, are increasingly becoming "sloaney" as young people move from the West End to the more bohemian atmosphere of Notting Hill. This has even given rise to the term "Ethnosloane."

In the United States, the equivalent to a Sloane is the "preppy", which derives from the term "prep school", which are private, university preparation schools. Preppies are generally WASPS, an acronym for White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, a term that refers to the descendants of wealthy British immigrants who settled in the northeast United States in its early days.
