noun

- a disturbance, commotion

(American Heritage Dictionary)

---
Etymology: Ruckus is probably a blend of rumpus (loud noise and arguing) and ruction (noisy argument or complaints). Although there is no evidence to support it, rumpus is said to have originated from German university students who used it as slang for a violent disturbance or uproar.

Ruction means the same thing as rumpus and ruckus, but derives from the word "insurrection, which is defined as an organized attempt by a group of people to defeat their government and take control of their country, usually by violence.

While a ruckus can be something on a large scale, including violence and injuries, most of what we experience is on a much smaller scale. For instance, in the summer of 1936, the Marx Brothers went on the road to try out some new ideas before filming A Day at the Races. In San Francisco one night, the show went over its scheduled hour. To speed things up, the director sent Groucho onstage while Chico was playing the piano.

When Groucho launched into his routine, the audience, eager to hear Chico playing, began to boo. Groucho waited calmly until the ruckus died down. "I have to be here," he playfully declared. "I'm getting paid. But nobody's keeping you." The remark was welcomed with laughter and the show went on.
