RTFM
slang acronym
- a disparaging acronym popular among customer service professionals to tell someone they should read the handbook before asking a question: Read The F_____ing Manual!
(DH)
---
WORD ORIGIN
Technology, particularly consumer electronics, is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we have at our disposal a wealth of devices to simplify daily tasks or which are just plain fun. The downside is that many of them have become so complex as to make even the most intelligent person feel like a moron. But manufacturers are kind enough to give us instruction manuals guaranteed to help us get started in just a matter of minutes. At least that’s what they would have us believe.
Read the manual before installing or operating, we are told. But for many people, this is too time-consuming, not to mention that some instruction manuals are poorly written. And who wants to spend an hour perusing a 32-page thick booklet when you could be pushing buttons and connecting cables? And isn’t it easier to just call someone and ask for help if you run into a problem?
Thus was the caustic acronym RTFM born (choose your own "F" word). Luckily some manufacturers are taking the concept of "user friendly" seriously and are actually producing devices that can be powered-up and ready to go within minutes of unpacking it – and without reading one line of an instruction manual. This provides a glimmer of hope for those who might otherwise shy away from buying that new mobile phone that does everything except wash the dishes.
