WORD ORIGIN
Retro as a stand-alone adjective has been around since the 1970s. It’s a shortened form of retrograde, which was borrowed from the Latin retrogradus (going backward). According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, retro was first used to describe a revival of clothes fashions inspired by Eva Peron in the late 1960s.
Retro is used as a prefix in words like retroactive, retrospect, retrofit and retrorocket (a rocket engine that provides thrust in the opposite direction, thus causing it to slow down). It was borrowed from the Latin retro, meaning backward, back, behind.
