monetization
noun (verb = monetize)
- the act of establishing legal tender
- the act of coining money
- the act of converting government debt from securities into currency that can be used to purchase goods and services
(The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition)
---
WORD ORIGIN
Officially, monetization is the process of converting or establishing something into legal tender (see OWAD archive: http://owad.de/owad-archive-quiz.php4?id=1814).
It usually refers to the printing of banknotes but can also include gold, silver or diamonds. Monetization can also involve securities such as stocks and bonds. In effect, anything can be monetized, whether it has real value or not.
"Unofficially", the business world uses monetization as a broad term to describe using any type of asset to generate revenue. Unlike the automobile manufacturer that sells cars to make money (cars being tangible or real assets), most internet companies look for ways to turn information services, which are intangible assets, into revenues streams. More and more, processes such as these are being referred to as monetization. Some of us might argue that it's just another way to say "make money."
Example: Let's say an online service provider determines that it has a large number of users who are nearing retirement age and who have substantial sums of retirement income. In partnership with different banks and financial institutions, the provider develops a service for this target group that makes it easy to understand and manage retirement investments. Revenue is generated through advertising fees paid by the partners. What the service provider has done is to "monetize" this user group.
