"KILLING TWO BIRDS - The government had already signalled that stamp duty had assumed an increasingly important role in generating revenue, and another increase was widely predicted.

For Mr Brown, it very neatly KILLS TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE. On the one hand, it helps to choke off a boom in the housing market in the South-East, which if allowed to run out of control could stoke up inflation."

Did you
know?

to kill two birds with one stone

Means to achieve 2 things at the same time.

This idiom is so well known in English that we often don't finish it. You can just use the phrase "kill two birds..." and your English speaking friends will fill in the rest in their minds.

It's interesting that in German we say "to kill two flies..." to express the same idea.

Warning:

The "unfinished sentence technique" may impress your English friends, but used in the presence of your German (or other non-native English speakers) may cause confusion!
