juxtapose (noun = juxtaposition)
verb

- to place side by side, especially for comparison or contrast

(American Heritage Dictionary)

---
Juxtapose, and the noun juxtaposition, stem from the Latin "iuxta," meaning "beside, near," plus the French "position." It literally means to place side by side, often with the aim of comparing two things.

In art for instance, this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used. The viewer's attention is drawn to the similarities or differences between the elements.

Juxtaposition plays an important role in newspaper and magazine layout. Well-juxtaposed images and/or headlines can deliver a message for instance. Or they can be humorous.

When badly-juxtaposed though, pictures and words can unintentionally create irony, sometimes in bad taste:

"Michelle Obama sports $2,000 dress" juxtaposed with "McDonalds offers free coffee in tough economic times"

"Facebook's value swells to $50 billion after Goldman Sachs investment" juxtaposed with
"MySpace set to cut up to 50% of staff"

"Police Dispute Rating For Violent Crime" juxtaposed with "Human Skull Found Near Uptown Charlotte"
