WORD ORIGIN

Haptic ultimately comes from Ancient Greek haptikos, meaning “able to come into contact with”, from haptein, “to fasten” or “touch”. English acquired the adjective in the 19th century. Merriam-Webster records its first known use as 1860.

There is a pleasing logic to the Greek origin. The original idea was not simply touching but coming into contact — something making physical connection with something else.

The related noun haptics now refers particularly to technology that produces sensations of touch or movement for a user.

THE POWER OF TOUCH

A blind horse named Milo is set to compete in this year’s “Horse of the Year Show” after adapting to what has been described as an  equine form of Braille. Milo and his owner, Megan Share, had competed in dressage for years before an infection left him blind three years ago.

Milo now relies on touch, using Share’s physical cues and the feel of the ground beneath his hooves to navigate his surroundings. He returned to competition last year and took first place at the 2025 Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Milo reminds us that sometimes the surest way forward is not to look, but to feel.
