Grexit
noun

- the possibility of Greece leaving the Eurozone

(Financial Times Lexicon)

---
Grexit is a portmanteau derived from the words Greek/Greece and exit. It was allegedly coined by Citigroup executive Ebrahim Rahbari in a paper he authored together with the bank's chief economist.

The possibility of Greece leaving the Eurozone has led to spirited debates in political circles and in the media. The hype has increased at the prospect of the liberal Syriza party winning the parliamentary elections in Greece because it is opposes the austerity measures implemented by the so-called troika in 2011.

Troika is a slang term for the three organizations which have the most power over Greece's financial future within the EU. The three groups are the European Commission (EC), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank (ECB).

The term troika is Russian in origin and refers to a triad or three of a kind. It originally referred to a type of sleigh drawn by three horses, so it can refer to any situation that involves or relies on the functioning of three separate parts.
