Get back behind your lawnmower. Go back to weeding the garden. Take a hike. Go fishing. Pitch a tent in the great outdoors. In short, GET A LIFE and take advantage of the fact that we’re all supposed to disengage a bit during the summer and enjoy life.

catch phrase

- a sarcastic way to tell someone they are spending too much time on unimportant things

WORD ORIGIN

"Get a life" is a sarcastic, sometimes insulting catch phrase used to tell a person they are devoting too much time to trivial or hopeless matters.

It's also used as a variant of the phrase "Get a job!" This implies that the person needs to go out and make their way in the world, without being supported by outside sources such as parents.

"Get a life!" may also be directed at someone who is perceived as boring or single-minded, to suggest they acquire other more practical interests or hobbies, find friends or go out on dates. It might also be applied to so-called workaholics who are perceived as dedicated to their work but not taking the time to relax or enjoy life.

Sometimes the phrase is used against people who are viewed as officious or nosing around in someone else's affairs. It's another way of saying "Get your own life," or "Stay out of my business."

If someone tells you to get a life, technology can make it possible these days. A man in Perth Australia sold his entire life through an Internet auction site. This included his house, car, motorcycle and jet skis plus a trial period at his job and an introduction to all of his friends. The only thing he didn't sell was his ex-wife. Although he complained that he didn't get as much money as he had hoped, the winning bid was still $384,000. That's certainly enough to "get a new life!"
