Eat your heart out!
idiomatic phrase (imperative form)
- used to indicate that one thinks someone will feel great jealousy or regret
(Oxford Dictionary)
---
This expression has nothing to with eating for nourishment or enjoyment by the way. As far back as the Iliad, there are literary references to "eating one's heart out" in the sense of extreme grief. In other words, experiencing pain so severe that it would eat at your emotions, or your heart.
It would have then been a small leap to "eat your heart out" in the sense of being extremely jealous, which occurs when something we already possess is threatened, or envious, which is when we lack a desired attribute enjoyed by another.
Apart from eating your heart out, you can also:
- pour your heart out = to tell one's personal feelings to someone (He will pour his heart out to anyone willing to listen)
- cry your heart out = to cry heavily or a lot (That movie made me cry my heart out)
