deadlock
noun

- a situation in which agreement in an argument cannot be reached because neither side will change its demands or accept any of the demands of the other side

deadlocked
adjective

---
Deadlock was first recorded in the late 18th century and stems from "dead" + "lock." It describes a standstill where neither side in an argument or conflict is willing to change or compromise their position.

Deadlocks can happen in a variety of situations: disputes between countries, contract negotiations between companies and unions or during trials when jurors cannot agree on a guilty or not guilty verdict. And of course deadlocks occur on a personal basis, whether it's between neighbours or the husband and wife who can't agree on which television program to watch.

If the television deadlock becomes too serious and leads to divorce, the negotiations can also result in an impasse, sometimes for strange reasons. In 2009, a New York doctor and his wife were attempting to settle their divorce when the doctor demanded that his wife give him back the kidney that he had donated to her several years ago. That's one tough negotiator.
