Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary

---
At the end of the 18th century when the term bogus first appeared in print, it was used by the criminal world to describe counterfeit coins. By the mid-19th century, it was being referred to as a machine used to make counterfeit coins.

The meaning eventually expanded to cover fake paper money and just about anything that appeared to be more valuable than it actually was.

Some people trace the origin of bogus to the word to "tantrabobus" (also tantrabogus) a late 18th century colloquial term that apparently was used in the U.S. state of Vermont to describe any odd-looking object.

Another theory is that bogus may be connected to "tantarabobs," a Devonshire name for the devil. Still others believe bogus is related to several dialect words such as bogey, boggart and boogieman, all of which have their origins in evil or spooky creatures.

One more suggestion is that it stems from "boko," a word from a West African language that means fake. This is a plausible theory under the assumption that boko was brought to America via West African slaves.
