The expression "bad hair day" stems from the idea that when you can’t seem to be able to do anything with your hair, it basically ruins your entire day. The expression was popularized in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a 1992 comedy/horror film about a California high school cheerleader who finds out she is destined to hunt vampires. In the film, Buffy says to the one-armed vampire Amilyn: "I'm fine but you're obviously having a bad hair day." The phrase was already known by that date but not widely used.

For those who occasionally suffer from real bad hair days, there is hope. As reported in the Globe & Mail, researchers have discovered that traces of copper in the water that people wash their hair with from the pipes in their homes can damage their locks.

They found the metal gradually builds up in hair, helping to speed up damage caused by sunlight, causing split ends, flyaway strands and less shine. The effect is even more pronounced in those who use hair dyes, they claim.

Beauty giant Procter and Gamble is now attempting to exploit the findings by developing new hair dyes and a range of shampoo to prevent copper from causing damage. Will that be the end of bad hair days? Hard to imagine.
