Allen occasionally went to similar lengths to avoid crossing bridges. Among his other phobias? Dogs, deer, and bright colours - which is why he and the characters he plays nearly always dress blandly, in green and brown corduroy. "There have been times," he once declared, "when I would buy a newspaper or a magazine prior to a five-flight elevator ride because I didn't want to be alone with my thoughts in the elevator for 30 seconds."

Talking of being afraid, at a business reception I once heard a German speaker translate "Ich freue mich Sie kennenzulernen" as "I am afraid to meet you".
