"When the newscaster Martyn Lewis pointed out the obvious - that there is too much bad news and not enough celebration of the good - he was ridiculed as being WET BEHIND THE EARS."

To be "wet behind the ears" means to be naive and inexperienced, like a newborn baby.

Origin: When a baby is born, it is covered with mucous (Schleim) and fluid. It takes a little while for the baby to dry off. "Wet behind the ears" refers to a time shortly after birth before being completely dry. Protected areas, such as the area behind the ears, take a bit longer.
