ORIGIN

VAPE appeared in the 1980s (in reference to an experimental ‘non-combustible’ cigarette): abbreviation of vapour or vaporize

In 2004 The Oxford English Dictionary selected "vape" as its word of the year. "A gap emerged in the lexicon, as a word was needed to describe this activity, and distinguish it from 'smoking,'" said the dictionary in a statement. "The word vape arose to fill this gap, and it has proliferated along with the habit."

The endurance of VAPE may depend on the durability of e-cigarettes themselves, but with over 96,000,000 google hits and projected global sales of $32 billion by 2021, VAPE and VAPING look like becoming permanent additions to the English language.

The effects of vaping on the human body are not yet fully known. However, they are considered less toxic than traditional tobacco cigarettes because they produce vapor instead of smoke. They are considered as an effective method that helps smokers quit smoking, though there is no scientifically grounded evidence for this.
