TGIF is one of those idiomatic phrases that constantly make it into our pop culture. It's origin is unknown, but as the phrase suggests it's a way of expressing relief that the work week is over in anticipation of relaxing or partying on the weekend.
if you believe the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force), they were the first to coin the phrase as part of the Friday “beer call” ritual famous among the military forces. One thing does seem to be certain, the phrase was popularised through the 1978 movie “Thank God it's Friday”, a bad film with a great soundtrack including songs from disco queen Donna Summer.
